AmaCares holds workshops in schools throughout the United Kingdom and Ghana – West Africa. We adopt a practical and multi-faceted approach in educating children about child sexual abuse.
Our workshops are spearheaded by dedicated medical doctors, self-defence instructors, police officers, psychiatrists and counsellors to equip children with the requisite knowledge and tools to protect themselves and others against child sexual abuse.
AmaCares believes that the stigma surrounding child sexual abuse contributes to the perpetuation of the problem. Therefore, we ensure that our workshops provide a safe space for children to have open and honest discussions about their experiences.
The open and honest discussions allows our specialist teams to gain an in-depth insight into the experiences and concerns of the youth we work with and use this information as the basis of providing the tailored support that they need.
We have successfully carried out several workshops in both UK and Ghana. Feedbacks from heads of schools, teachers and students, parents, guardians and community leaders has been very positive. At some of the workshops, students have reported being sexually abused by fellow students or seniors. In a recent workshop, a survey of about 500 students was taken of which 48 students reported being sexually abused. A significant number of children out of this group reported that they were abused by family members or close friends to the family. Our strategy of targeting the entire community with our campaigns and awareness creation enables us to highlight the problem to members of the community. We believe that this is a community wide problem and by encouraging all to be vigilant, we can all play a significant part in supporting victims and children at risk of sexual abuse and also help reduce and stop this horrible crime.
